SUPPORT THE SOURCES

Support the work
behind the record.

This archive only exists because others publish research openly, report carefully and keep knowledge freely available. The best way to contribute is to support them.

01 / OPEN KNOWLEDGE

Help the sources stay reachable.

The People index links each name to Wikipedia as a place to start learning more. Wikipedia is written and maintained by volunteers, and the Wikimedia Foundation accepts donations. You can also help directly by correcting or improving an article with a reliable source.

The Internet Archive preserves web pages so that cited sources stay reachable after their original links change, which matters for a project built on source links.

02 / OPEN RESEARCH

Keep the science free to read.

More timeline entries link to arXiv than to any other source. It is free to read and free to submit to, and donations help fund its ongoing operations. Many of the field’s landmark papers are also available openly through NeurIPS and other conference proceedings.

03 / INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM

Pay for the reporting you rely on.

Where the archive records contested or fast-moving events, it leans on credible reporting. Careful journalism is costly to produce. If you read it regularly, a subscription or reader contribution is a direct way to keep it going. The Guardian, which is cited in the timeline, is funded by its readers.

Where you can, read the original report or primary document and not just a summary of it. Following the source trail helps the outlets and researchers who did the work.

04 / DATA & ANALYSIS

Go to the original data.

The Race borrows a small, dated snapshot from Artificial Analysis. Their leaderboard is the live version, with the full methodology. Visiting it, rather than relying on our snapshot, is the best way to support their work and to see current results.

For policy context, Stanford’s DigiChina project publishes analysis and translations of Chinese technology policy, which the archive cites.

05 / THE WIDER COST

Give something back to the planet.

Training and running AI systems uses a great deal of energy, and the archive records that progress without counting its environmental cost. Junglekeepers protects rainforest in Peru’s Las Piedras corridor, part of the Amazon in Madre de Dios, which is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.

A donation is not a precise offset for any particular model or data centre. It is a way to support conservation work alongside the progress this archive documents.

06 / SPREAD THE RECORD

Cite sources, not summaries.

Share entries that interest you and link to the source behind them. Treat the archive as a map, not as the evidence: each entry points to the document that backs it. Acknowledging the people and organisations who did the work is a contribution too.
